PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN OF
HOSPICE PHILIPPINES
Primarily to promote national awareness of
its urgent mission, Hospice Philippines
solicits the help of print media, radio and
television networks for the publicity of its
services by featuring hospice institutions or
personal interviews of hospice care
practitioners and their patients. The hospice
movement has gained the support of
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo with the
issuance of Proclamation No. 1110
declaring the first week of October of each
year as “National Hospice and Palliative
Care Week”. During the hospice week,
members of Hospice Philippines conduct
various activities in their respective areas
coordinated by Hospice Philippines. In
Manila, a symbolic “HOSPICE WALK” is held
on the last day of the week to dramatize the
“walk by hospice care service providers with
their patients to their new homes beyond the
earth”.
As hosts of the 7th Asia Pacific Hospice
Conference (APHC), Hospice Philippines,
through its media program, was able to
connect with other hospice care
organizations and service providers who are
not yet members of Hospice Philippines.

NETWORKING AND COORDINATION OF

PART II
THE ORGANIZTION OF HOSPICE
PHILIPPINES
On September 9, 2003, a group of thirteen
(13) hospice and palliative institutions and
seventy-six (76) individual hospice care
providers formed the National Hospice and
Palliative Care Council of the Philippines
(Hospice Philippines) to rationalize the
operations of hospice care institutions in
the country. As prime mover of hospice and
committed to ensure the best quality of life
for terminally-ill cancer patients and those
afflicted with life threatening illnesses and
their families. It aims to promote
networking and cooperative linkages with
local and international hospice
organizations, engage in advocacy, support
education and training, establish standards
research and set up a registry.
To date, Hospice Philippines has grown to
twenty-four (24) hospice institutions and five
hundred twenty (520) individual service care
providers in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
With the rising incidence of cancer and
other life-threatening illnesses such as
HIV/AIDS, the hospice movement seeks to
meet the challenge of serving, principally,
indigent patients and their families.
Recent surveys show that cancer is the third
cause of death in the Philippines. Notable
in the survey is the rising incidence of
HIV/AIDS. From January 1984 to July 2007,
there were 2,916 reported HIV Ab
seropositve cases of which 2,146 (74%)
were asymptomatic and 770 (26%) AIDS
cases.

referred to specialized institutions for
hospice care or support services such as:

children with branches and collaborators
nationwide; (2) STARFISH, at San Lazaro

Rabies;(3) CHILD HOUSE, a half-way
house for hospice patients while awaiting
treatment; and (4) JOY IN THE LIVING
FOUNDATION, a support group for cancer
patients whose activities range from music
sessions, art for healing, nutrition
