The year started with continuous heavy rainfall in the Bicol
region, Southern Leyte, Eastern Samar, Surigao del Sur
and Palawan. Thousands of residents lost their homes and
their means of livelihood as flooding and landslides
washed away their yet to be harvested crops and
destroyed their fishing boats. In many areas, much of the
damage was mainly attributed by the residents to mining
operations and uncontrolled illegal logging and
deforestation.
The St. James COPA Foundation, through its
Emergency Assistance Program, coordinated with the
Social Action Heads of the various Dioceses/ Vicariates
affected by this calamity and released funds to them
through their Social Action Centers. The funds were used
to purchase relief goods( specifically food items like rice,
noodles, and canned goods) for the affected families. In
the Diocese of Borongan, the Catholic Social Services
Centers worked together with the local government, and
with private institutions and NGOs such as the Red Cross,
Gawad Kalinga, etc. in the relief operations.
Listed below are the emergency assistance funds released
to the various affected dioceses/ vicariates:
Legaspi, Albay Php 50,000.00
Southern Leyte (St. Bernard) 50,000.00
Borongan, Eastern Samar 50,000.00
San Miguel, Surigao del Sur 75,000.00
Puerto Princesa, Palawan 75,000.00
Total Php 300,000.00
We also released an additional Php 50,000.00 to
Puerto Princesa to help the victims (low income
parish/vicariate workers) of the fire which razed the
vicariate house where they were living.
