Victims of a fire that struck the Carmina Compound along the East Service Road in Cupang, Muntinlupa last May 15 were sent badly
needed aid by the Emergency Assistance program of the SJ COPA Foundation. About 850 bags, re-packed by parishioner volunteers
and one temporary staff, were sent out to a community where about 800 to 1,000 residential structures and shanties were burned.
There were two (2) sets of packed bags. The first set packed were from the first batch of donations received. This set of bags contained:
old clothes, biscuits, canned goods (sardines, meat loaf, Vienna sausages, corned beef), powdered milk, noodles, water, and a banig
(woven mat). The second and later set of bags contained: rice, biscuits, canned goods (sardines, meat loaf, Vienna sausages, corned
beef), water, noodles, and a banig (woven mat).
Being a so-called A-B-C community (where A = Association; B = Barangay; and C = Church), delivery of the packed bags were done with
the help of the Village Association trucks, drivers and personnel who helped carry the bags from the Church of St. James the Great to
where the fire victims were.
Based on the report of the Bureau of Fire Protection Fire District III - NCR, Muntinlupa City Fire Station, the fire began at about 4:10 P.M. on
the Saturday of May 15. Traffic along the Southern Luzon Expressway (SLEX) was temporarily stopped due to the thick smoke that could
have endangered lives in a high-speed thoroughfare.
The fire, reportedly, came from the second floor of one of the houses but its origin was still to be undetermined. When the fire was put
out at 8:23 P.M., there were no reports of deaths or injuries. However, an estimated damage of about PhP85 million was computed and
about 850 families were affected by the tragedy.
would like to thank everyone who has given of their time and treasure in order to lessen the loss of others living so close to our homes.
