The problem of poverty has been with the country for such a
long time. The church of the Poor Apostolate of St. James the
Great Parish had tried its best in the past to alleviate the
poverty in many regions(parishes) in the country by sending
monetary assistance.
But the bigger problem of evangelization is not addressed by
COPA singly because we are so separated from them. We
realize that we must go out of our way to reach out to the
poorest of the poor in order to help them empower themselves
so that they contribute to the task of nation-building.
This is now the thrust of COPA. We will still continue to send
material assistance to the poor parishes but we will try our best
to reach out to them so that their Christian awareness in
relation to the ills of the country may be solidly formed.
May the God of light and wisdom help us in this monumental
task!
The Work Continues for the Prison Ministry By: Lito Barcelona
|
On March 26, 2011, some forty-three inmates of
Tunasan City Jail graduated from the school
year-long catechism classes conducted by the DVMI
sisters from June to March. The sisters taught the
inmates the seven sacraments, and the importance
of Holy Mass and confession. Classes are held
every 2nd and 4th Saturdays of every month with a
Mass officiated usually by former St. James priest Fr.
Blas Briones, and Fr. Jaw of the Society of Jesus.
The catechism classes complement the informal
education classes given by the Dept. of Education.
St. James Prison Ministry provide the inmates with
school supplies. St. James parishioners Bert
Soriano, Matt Simbulan, Chito Limcaoco, Boy Zara,
Cerie de Leon, Butch Mayoralgo, Mike Tantoco and
family, make up the corp of volunteers for this
project.
Another project jointly sponsored by Ministry and
the Ligaya ng Panginoon Covenanted Community
was the Medical and Dental Mission on March 28,
with doctors and medical personnel from the Rizal
Medical Center.
Some 200 inmates availed of medical services while
50 availed of dental services. The Prison Ministry
shouldered the cost of van rental for the medical
personnel, medicines and other supplies used in the
mission.
Food was provided by Prison Ministry volunteer Boy
Gorrez, while the BEC 3 donated sulphur soap which
was distributed among the inmates.

The Ministry and Ligaya ng Panginoon are also partners in the value formation sessions
conducted weekly every Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Boy and Mayette Gorrez,
Lito Barcelona, three couples from Ligaya ng Panginoon, and some former inmates
already released, form the core group of volunteers for this project.
Another meaningful project of the Ministry is legal assistance such as following up of
papers for the speedy resolution of their cases. Cases of inmates are handled by Public
Attorneys Office with BJMP doing the paralegal work. In 2010, 40 inmates were released
while to date in 2011, 7 inmates have been released.
For the just-concluded Lenten season, a Mass was held for the inmates on Ash
Wednesday, the second time in a row, while confessions were heard by Fr. Blas Briones
on March 26. A Pabasa was also held on Holy Wednesday.
